Tennis roundup: 'Rocks fall to No. 11 Eagles

The Westfield girls tennis team played tough against No. 11-ranked Zionsville Monday, dropping the dual Hoosier Crossroads Conference match 4-1.
No. 2 singles Olivia Pursell won the No. 29 Shamrocks' lone match, earning a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory.
"Olivia played a great match," said WHS coach Trudy Coler. "She went three sets and her last set, she just overall played very, very well."
Westfield returns to its home courts today, playing Lafayette Jeff in a 5 p.m. HCC dual meet.

Zionsville 4, Westfield 1
No. 1 singles: Courtney Ramey (W) lost to Middleton (Z) 6-1, 6-4
No. 2 singles: Olivia Pursell (W) def. Mowatt (Z) 6-3, 3-6, 7-5
No. 3 singles: Rachel Gidley (W) lost to Byam (Z) 6-1, 6-3
No. 1 doubles: Maddy Grubb and Kelly Bedford lost to A. Hansen and L. Hansen (Z) 6-0, 6-0

No. 1 Hounds win opener

The Carmel Girls' tennis team opened up their 2010 season, with a 4-1 win over Heritage Christian. Five Carmel seniors were featured in the opening match at the Todd Witsken Tennis Center.
Carmel opened its season Tuesday with a 4-1 defeat of No. 10 Center Grove at the Todd Witsken Tennis Center.
The Greyhounds, who are the defending state champions and ranked No. 1 in the state, got wins from Courtney Wild at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-2) and Mikaela Carlson at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2). Carmel also swept the doubles with No. 1 Sarah Rodefeld and Susie Chen winning 6-0, 6-0 and No. 2 Annika Carlson and Amanda Nguyen getting a 6-0, 6-2 victory. The Greyhounds' No. 2 doubles teams have gone undefeated the past two years.
Carmel travels to Brebeuf Jesuit today for a 5 p.m. dual meet with the 19th-ranked Braves.

'Blazers blank Arlington
University scored a 5-0 win over Arlington Tuesday.
Winners for the Trailblazers were Ellie Hoover, Liu Thomas, Haley Krieble, Abbey MacAllister and Ali MacAllister.

Golden Eagles defeat Taylor
The Guerin Catholic girls tennis team defeated Taylor 4-1 on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles swept the singles, with Katie Barrett, Lauren Jonathan and Whitney Gryna all getting straight-set wins. The No. 2 doubles team of Audrey Zigmond and Abbie Hogan won its match 6-4, 6-0.
"Our singles did a good job remaining focused on an improving Taylor team," said GCHS coach Joe Lustig. "We need to find a way to take advantage of our strengths in doubles and minimize our errors. We set up many points but could not finish."

HSE rolls past Wildcats
Hamilton Southeastern had no trouble against Lawrence North in a Tuesday away dual meet, dropping just 10 games in a 5-0 dual meet victory.
Winners for the ninth-ranked Royals were Carol Hsu, Kristie Hsu and Kelly Iden in singles, and the doubles teams of Lina Goens and Stephanie Iden, and Taylor Grayson and Holly Becker.
Southeastern travels to No. 11-ranked Zionsville today for a 4:30 p.m. Hoosier Crossroads Conference dual meet.
